FLIR K1 Donations to Fight Australian Forest Fires
The damage left in the wake of the Australian forest fires has been catastrophic. Roughly 25.5 million acres have been burned, killing 33 people and destroying 3,000 homes. More than 1 billion mammals, birds, and reptiles likely lost their lives. When the local volunteer fire departments were discharged to combat the fire, it became apparent they were under-equipped with fire-fighting technology.

Thermal Imaging Lets Researchers See Beyond the Surface of Butterfly Wings
It turns out that butterflies are just as striking in thermal as they are in the visible light spectrum. Recently, researchers from Columbia Engineering and Harvard University published a study in Nature examining the thermodynamic properties of butterfly wings and the importance of radiative cooling in keeping these delicate structures fluttering. Nanfang Yu, associate professor of applied physics at Columbia, describes how thermal imaging played an important role in the study.

Firefighters Use a FLIR TIC to Make a Lifesaving Grab
When a burning building is filled with smoke, a thermal imaging camera (TIC) may be a firefighter’s best chance for navigating the interior to locate and rescue victims. This past summer, firefighters Robert McCarthy and Randy Rosseau with Palm Bay Fire Rescue in Florida made lifesaving use of a TIC, the FLIR K40, when they entered an active house fire and rescued a man and several dogs.
