  • Researchers Develop Search and Rescue Technology That Sees Through Forest with Thermal Imaging

    A team of researchers at Johannes Kepler University in Austria released a paper published in Nature Machine Intelligence that describes a technique called airborne optical sectioning (AOS), which allows an aerial imager to see through occlusions like a forest canopy. The team, headed by Professor Oliver Bimber, achieved an accurate classification rate of over 90% using a drone equipped with a FLIR Vue Pro thermal imaging camera and a machine learning algorithm trained to identify humans below.

    Gas leaks are often invisible to the naked eye, and may occur anywhere along a pipeline or other infrastructure. Depending on the gas in question, a leak could mean anything from lost profits to extreme hazards to human safety and the health of the environment. Because gas leaks can be difficult or nearly impossible to detect with tools like gas sniffers, many utility companies are turning to optical gas imaging to better detect leaks.

The Other Transaction Authority (OTA) agreement was awarded through the Joint Program Executive Office for Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Defense (JPEO-CBRND) as a follow-on to a $48 million contract announced in April 2019.

(NASDAQ: FLIR) announced that the United States (U.S.) Air Force has ordered more than 180 of the company’s Centaur™ unmanned ground vehicles (UGV), plus spares. The $23 million contract is sourced through the Dept. of Defense Man Transportable Robotic System Increment II (MTRS Inc II) program.
